Human Resource Essay

Question 1: How would you forecast the manpower needs of Ya Kun? Ya Kun can forecast their manpower by using trend analysis, ratio analysis, scatter plot and computerized system. The personnel can use either one of these method of finding new recruitment. Based on trend analysis, Ya Kun find new recruit by using their past experienced which means that they can provide an initial estimate of future staffing needs, but employment levels rarely depend just on the passage of time. They looked their past performance of sales, productivity and so on to estimate their employee also because if their performance goes beyond their expectation like Ya kun that have many outlets throughout the world, they may required more employee either full time or part-time. Other forecasting method that Ya Kun can use to forecast their manpower is ratio analysis. In this method, Ya Kun forecast based on the historical ratio between some causal factor (like sales volume) and the number of employee required such salespeople. In this case, Ya Kun need more employee because they need more salespeople to run the business in each of their outlets. The sales volume for Ya Kun also one of the factor that Ya Kun need to recruit employee. Compared to trend analysis, ratio analysis assumes that productivity remains about the same. Personnel also can use scatter plot to forecast their manpower. In this method, the personnel may use two related variables to indicate the relation between the two such as sales volume and number of employee. If these two factors are related, then the points will tend to fall along straight line then the personnel can forecast the need of new recruitment. Computerized forecasting also is one way that personnel can use to forecast their need of manpower. With programs like these, employers can more accurately estimate how many employee that they need to projected productivity and sales. Many firms use computerized employee forecasting system for particularly for estimating short-term needs. In Ya Kun case, their personnel may need this program because they have many outlets that need more part-time worker to replace fulltime worker if needed. Question 2: What are the advantages and disadvantages of Ya Kun’s hiring part-time workers? Part-time workers are those who whether by personal choice or due to employment conditions beyond their control work fewer hours than the regular, full-time staff of a business over the course of a year. There is no specific number of hours that makes someone full or part-time, but a full-time worker will usually work 35 hours or more a week. The advantages of Ya Kun’s hiring part-time workers are part-time workers are less expensive than full-time workers. This is because some of them are paid less than half of what full-time workers, who do the same work, are paid. In other hand, part-time workers will not get benefits same like full-time workers such as insurance or sick pay. So Ya Kun’s can save significant amount of money by hiring part-time workers. Most of the part-timers are student, since it allows them to balance their academic needs with their school needs and they are often willing to learn new tasks and responsibilities when doing their work. Therefore, they will do their job better than full-time workers and this will increase labour productivity of Ya Kun’s. Furthermore, Ya Kun’s only hiring part-time workers when the full-time workers go on vacation or become ill. Students are particularly useful in meeting these periods of high demand in order to ensure that the needs of Ya Kun ’s customers are met and will increase in Ya Kun’s output as well. The disadvantages of Ya Kun’s hiring part-time workers are Ya Kun’s need extra time to train part-time workers to get knowledge about their work and they also need to be guide by someone before they can do their work by their own. Besides that, it will increase training cost of Ya Kun’s. Part-time workers have to go for training before they can start their work in order to avoid from low skilled workers. This also will affect productivity of Ya Kun’s. Moreover, part-time workers have higher absenteeism rates. This is because most of the part-time workers are student and they only doing part-time work to get extra money or just for fun. Besides that, they do not think about their commitment so they keep absent to work. Question 3: A good attitude and commitment are two important attributes that Ya Kun looks for in its job applicant. Is a job interview an effective method to assess these two attributes? What else can Ya Kun do to get reliable information on these two attributes? It is good to have job interview, but conducting a case test and attitude test would help to assess the attribute. Recruiting via the internet: The recruiter should be given complete description about the job and who will be qualified to apply for the job. A simple test could be done to screen the applicants online. Afterwards, a job interview will be needed. Advertising: The employer should advertise their ads where they’ll reach your prospective employees. The recruiter should be given complete description about the job and who will be qualified to apply for the job. Afterwards, a job interview will be needed. Private employment agency: The recruiter should be given complete description about the job and who will be qualified to apply for the job. Afterwards, a job interview will be needed. Walk-ins: This involves direct interview, which is the effective way to measure good attitude and commitment rather than just simply looking at the resume. Question 4: What suggestion would you make to Ya Kun to improve its recruiting processes? From the case Ya Kun Kaya Toasts, we can see that Ya Kun used the recruitment and selection process through advertised in Chinese and English newspapers as well as trough recruitment notice at their outlets. There are few steps to applicants should be undergo before they can be select and recruit by Ya Kun Kaya Toasts. It start from the interview by two manager, screened primarily for their level of commitment and willingness to work shifts, screened for other desirable qualities, until when they successful then they need to go through 2 week training and remain on probation for 3 months. However, Ya Kun still thinking the way how to improve its recruiting process. The reasons why is because the main challenge Ya Kun face in its recruitment efforts is finding employees with the right attitude, because the technical skill required are relatively easy to learn. Other than that, there are some applicants were unwilling to work shifts, making it difficult for Ya Kun to hire them because shift work is inevitable in the food and beverage retail industry. Look at the case, challenge economic times are prompting employers especially Ya Kun manager to rethink how they go about recruiting process. So, there are several suggestions would we make thinks to Ya Kun can do to improve its recruiting processes. Firstly, from job opening for the outlet staff the point in your advertisement should reach your target prospective employees. Use the guide AIDA (attention, interest, desire, and action) to construct advertisements. You must attract attention to the advertisement. From that case, Ya Kun should state in the ad that all the responsibilities and qualifications required for work at Ya Kun. For example, under the responsibilities and qualifications required the applicants should be education because we know that the person who educated has the right attitude toward the job. Moreover, don’t forget to include the required for â€Å"work shifts interested only† in the advertisement. So that, during the interview period manager not wastes their time recruit the applicants. Secondly, recruitment materials have a more positive impact if they contain more specific information. That means, at the application form the manager should provide applicants with information on aspects of the job that are important to them, such as salary, location, and diversity. For example, pay the salary base on their schedule of shift work. As we look at the case, some applicants were unwilling to work shifts because they not satisfy about the salary especially when they work at second shift period from 3 P.M to 11 P.M. The reason because at that time, number of customer may be increase because that time are pass the work time and they may like to hang up at Ya Kun coffee shop with their friend and family. Moreover, the manager of Ya Kun also can do the job rotation which is the periodic shifting of a worker from one task to another. That means, results depend on how job satisfaction is measured. Thirdly, using application forms to predict job performance. In this stage, manager should already get all the application forms from the applicants who apply for that job after the certain period of job opening for the outlet staff or recruitment notice at their outlets. It is possible for the Ya Kun manager to use application form information to predict which candidates will be successful and which won’t, in much the same way that one might use test for screening. The basic process involves conducting statistical studies to analyze the relationship between biodata responses on the application form and measure of success on the job. It is important to choose the biodata items in order to look at their life style as well as other criteria such as their background, education, and others. So, we can evaluate the candidates during the interview session whether they pass or not. Conclusion It is important to understand the nature of the business that we are in before doing the recruitment and selection process. Different nature will result different way or step to look at the employees which is really suitable to apply as well as to be accept to work at that company or industry. From the case it start with personnel planning and forecasting where it is the process of deciding what position the Ya Kun industry will have to fill, and how to fill them. Filling open position with their internal sources of candidate make Ya Kun has several advantages. For example, Ya Kun has a family –style environment and established â€Å"promotion-from-within† policy and many more. Then as result, not only the organization build the good structure and enhance performance, but the emphasis on good attitude and character in the selection of outlet staff has help Ya Kun build a pool of hardworking and committed workers. Ultimately, the main goal that the Ya Kun will achieve is make it big through the improvement its recruiting process in the future. That all the improvement for Ya Kun has to face in order to take the challenge by increasing the commitment of all staff toward the company.

Becoming a scuba instructor

The life of a SCUBA instructor is something that people who have a passion for the water and the beach have imagined as ideal. In fact, it would be the perfect career for most because they think that it would mean spending the rest of one’s life on the beach, languishing under the warm tropical sun and taking a dive in the deep blue cold water. All of these benefits while enjoying a modest salary that allows for enjoyment of the other luxuries in life. For those who become successful as SCUBA instructors, the benefits are even better. One can become a world class instructor who explores old wrecks underneath the ocean and even have their own diving schools. Yet these are all dreams and perceptions of what it is like to be a SCUBA instructor. Not everyone gets a chance to enjoy this life. In fact, it is quite difficult and challenging to become a full fledged SCUBA instructor. In order to become one, there is a series of tests and practical examinations that one needs to undergo. The step after that involves taking additional training to ensure that the licensure is complete. As one SCUBA instructor put it, â€Å"Everyone always imagines a life of relaxation. They always feel as if it is simply swimming once in a while and taking people down for fun dives while getting paid for it. † This is not always the case because it involves a major lifestyle and career change. This also means that there are added responsibilities. The first step in being a SCUBA instructor lies in being able to understand the risks and responsibilities that are involved as well as figuring out the first step that one needs to take to pursue this career. The profession of SCUBA instructor, as previously mentioned, is not an easy one.SCUBA instructor is more of a technical term but the actual role that one plays in most dive operations is one of a dive-master rather than a SCUBA instructor. The main bulk of SCUBA resort operations are taking people down for diving trips.Providing i nstructions to new divers or those who want to improve their skills is only a small part of the entire business. Therefore, for those who want to be SCUBA instructor professionals, training as a dive-master is also necessary. This has been labeled as one of the first disappointments or reality checks that an eager SCUBA instructor has to deal with.It is not so much about teaching students how to dive but also acting as an underwater guide to those who already know how to dive but merely want somebody to lead them and show them around the dive area. This leads to the first aspect that must be considered before pursuing a career as a SCUBA instructor; making sure that if the thought of diving at the same spot in shallow water is something that one will be able to do day in and day out. To ensure that this does not happen, it is usually recommended that SCUBA instructors or applicants find the written job description first and get the proper certification. This leads to higher job satisf action. The reason for this is that it allows for more flexibility with regards to career. Under certain job descriptions, SCUBA instructors may be allowed to handle different classes in different sites depending on the size of the school. The pay grade is much higher, however, depending on the school and the lessons that are taught to the students. Another factor which affects the job pay is the experience that the instructor has which usually means that more experience leads to a better job and hence higher pay. This in return usually leads to a higher rate of job satisfaction. This job satisfaction, however, also requires certain additional qualifications that SCUBA instructors need to comply with. These requirements usually have to deal with the other tasks that a SCUBA instructor may be required to do.For example, most SCUBA instructors are required to have the basic knowledge on how to repair SCUBA gear. This means that the instructor must be proficient with not only one brand o f SCUBA equipment but must also have the knowhow for the other brands. Another requirement that is becoming common among SCUBA instructors is the basic knowledge to pilot a boat. While this is definitely not included in the job description, it is necessary because a number of resort owners would like to save on costs by having one person perform multiple positions. This experience in navigating a boat also carries the additional requirement of nautical licensure and familiarity with the parts of boat from a 15’ skiff to a 48’ cruiser. This also means that while no expertise that is on a specialist level is required a certain level of proficiency with regard to the workings of these basic machines is needed. One of the main draws of being a professional SCUBA instructor is the fact that it allows the individual to live on an island. This is, however, also one of the biggest risks and sources of stress. The reason for this is that living on an island also means that one is isolated from a lot of things in life. From a professional standpoint, this means that when the other duties and requirements, such as those mentioned above, are required, one must be able to deal with those problems with the basic tools. Most dive locations do not have the specialists who can deal with the problem as soon as it happens. These shops are usually located on the main island and need to travel to reach the destination of the dive spot. This means that there is a lag time and any good SCUBA instructor must be able to deal with the events happening immediately. This job hazard is usually very stressful and sometimes even hazardous. The next problem is with regard to the personal life of a SCUBA instructor. Being isolated on dive resorts also means being isolated from members of the family or society. As some studies have shown, prolonged isolation usually leads to certain problems and may lead to greater dangers such as alcoholism which is very dangerous for a SCUBA instruct or. Assignments on dive resorts can last for a span as short as six (6) months and extend to durations as long as six (6) years.Another aspect that a SCUBA instructor must deal with is in regard to interpersonal skills. One must remember that being a SCUBA instructor is not only showing people how to dive but also how one is able to teach. In this line, teaching entails that a person must also be able to communicate to the students just what exactly they must do. The most common problems that even experienced SCUBA instructors need to deal with are the fact that they have to teach people without offending them. Most vacationing divers are largely inexperienced and are not quite adept at even the most basic of diving regulations. In educating these people, it is necessary for the SCUBA instructor to be able to encourage them to learn more without putting them down. This is important because safety practices must always be observed before diving. Other problems with teaching also center on those who have been certified but are only taking their first dive. These are perhaps the most difficult bunch to instruct because they feel that they already know what to do.The self important attitude that most of these certified divers carry is a scary thing because they could always forget the basic safety regulations. As mentioned earlier, in diving, the most important thing is safety because there are a lot of hazards that a diver must deal with during the operation. This is more difficult considering the fact that certain countries have different diving regulations from others and these certified divers may feel that the SCUBA instructor is not an authority. The challenge here, therefore, lies in being able to deal with this people to ensure the safety of the group. Now that these basic requirements and training exercises have been elaborated on, it is also important to discuss the basic steps that one needs to undertake before becoming a SCUBA instructor. The most important step that one needs to take lies in certifying that one is in excellent medical condition. Due to the hazards that divers are exposed to at work, one must be physically fit to endure the rigors of diving. Specific requirements such as a current medical report including blood work, chest X-ray and physical fitness tests are necessary. There is also the matter of valid passport, work permits and of course certification to be a SCUBA instructor. The life of a SCUBA instructor is indeed a very promising one if one is able to carefully study and lay out their plan.As discussed previously, all the considerations such as proper training and expertise are very necessary. Individuals must be prepared for the tasks and responsibilities that the job requires. Aside from this there is also the matter of proper permits and interpersonal skills. One overlooked aspect of being a SCUBA instructor lies in understanding the difference between visiting and island the living on an island because these are two (2) very difficult things. Most people usually feel that living on an island is similar to visiting an island but these are not the same. The reason for this is because people must now deal with the living expenses in relation to the salary that they are provided. Most dive resort owners provide salary based on the cost of living scale of the location. As such, while it may seem that the SCUBA instructor is earning so much more than the locals, the conversion rate when compared to other countries may be much lower than average. This means that while one can live the life of a king on a tropical island, he or she may be a pauper in some other part of the world. To summarize, becoming a SCUBA instructor is not for everyone. While the lure of warm and sunny tropical beaches is definitely alluring, the fact that this is considered a job also means that there is work to be done. It is not all just fun and games. The positive side of this, however, is the fact that it really is much easier to do a job that one loves and enjoys.

Week 3 Discussion - Essay Example Schools need to take an active role in developing as well as promoting the physical, emotional, mental, and social health of students. There is also need to engage students in meaningful work. Since health is so relevant to students, undertaking tasks that are related to promoting their health can be used in capturing students’ interest and enhance development of skills and knowledge in other curriculum areas. By working closely with the community and families, schools have a chance to positively influence the health of students. In the past, many schools were against allocating their resources to health programs since benefits of these programs seemed insufficient. Today, however, benefits of these programs are clear. Studies have shown that introducing school-based health programs have many positive changes in the health-related behaviors of students (Meeks et al., 2011). Discuss critically distinctions between Islamic finance regulation and Essay

Discuss critically distinctions between Islamic finance regulation and conventional financing of commercial credit - Essay Example Islamic financing was first introduced in the UK in 1990 and has since developed to such an extent that the UK hosts the largest share of Islamic assets (valued at US$18 billion) among all Western countries and is eight worldwide.6 As of 2008, there were five â€Å"stand-alone† Islamic banks in the UK and more than 20 conventional banks offering Islamic products.7 This paper provides a critical analysis of the distinctions between Islamic finance regulation and conventional financing of commercial credit. The modernized form of Islamic finance began in Egypt during 1963 when the Mitt Ghamr savings system was introduced as a â€Å"social banking initiative†.8 By 1975 the first commercial Islamic banks were established: Islamic Development Bank and the Dubai Islamic Bank. The Islamic banking sector grew at a steady pace and by the 1990s there was a growing demand for Islamic financial products in investments and loans. In more recent years, the growth in demand and supply of Islamic financial products has been more expansive. Between 2006 and 2008, Islamic financial assets experienced a growth rate of 30%. As a result, Sharia compliant banking products have been described as the worlds â€Å"fastest growing financial sector†.9 There are at least 614 â€Å"registered Islamic finance institutions† in 47 countries with Islamic assets increasing from US$150 billion during the 1990s to approximately US$700 billion by 2007.10 The growth and expansion of Islamic banking and financial products have been impressive. Holden reports that over the last thirty years or so, Muslims all over the world have demonstrated a propensity for withdrawing billions of dollars from conventional banking systems and transferring them to Islamic banking and financial systems. In addition, conventional banks have shown an increasing willingness to offer Islamic banking and financial products and services.11 Islamic banking is defined as a â€Å"system of

Myths as Roman History Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Myths as Roman History - Essay Example Romans also developed few mythological tales such as the story of Cupid and Psyche. (Zipes, 2005) It is fact that classical mythology takes us to the journey of some primary characters and important stories of classical Greek and Roman mythology. As most of the classical myths in form of characters or stories have been carried out form generation to generation form story to story. Even in today's fiction or non-fiction we find good examples of classical myths. The very common myths that we find in study very often are the accounts of the creation of the world in Ovid's Metamorphoses; the gods Zeus or Jupiter, Apollo, Demeter, Persephone, Hermes, Dionysos and Aphrodite; the Greek heroes, Theseus and Hercules; and the famous of all myths, the Trojan War. (Ken, 1992) The classical mythology contains tales of the ancient Greek and Roman myths and literature, which shows great variety and originality that is unmatched even today. Greek mythology has close connection with Greek classical literature, which has universal appeal and had pass the test of time. Most of the Greek myths occurred in the works written between the time of Greek colonisation of the Mediterranean and the fall of the Roman Empire. On the other hand t On the other hand the Roman myth remained largely unwritten until the 1st BC to the decline of Roman Empire. Two great Roman authors, Ovid and Vergil, had used the Roman myths extensively and it is their writings that made classical myths popular. The impact of these writers was so great that it had become norm for the medieval Europe and modern society to use the more popular Roman names for the Greek gods and heroes. Even today the popularity of classical myths is evident in arts and literatures. Classical myths has been divided into four categories: 1. The Pantheon- loads with the information of Greek deities that includes the story of the Creation and host of other myths. 2. The Heroic Age- carries the description of Greek heroes and heroines with their adventures. It includes tales like "Jason and the Argonauts", "Seven Against Thebes", "Trojan War" and the "Odyssey". 3. Royal Houses- contains information of famous families in some of the most powerful cities in Greece. This section includes the stories of the Aeolids, Perseids and the House of Atreus, and of Troy. 4. The Geographia- provides with extra information about the ancient Greece, which mentioned in Greek Myths. (Morford & Lenardon, 1985) Some popular Roman myths: The Creation & Flood The creation myths in Ovid's Metamorphosis are the tales that describe how the earth came into existence. The story, which begins with a universe ruled by Chaos, from which the earth, (Ge, or Gaea) and the sky (Uranus) eventually emerged. Besides other mythological figures like Cupid (love) and Night came into being. As per myth the personified earth and sky mate to give birth to the first generation of godlike beings, the 12 Titans. The youngest Titans, Cronus (Roman Saturn) overthrew his father and ate his own children due to fear that one of his own children would usurp his throne. But one child was saved, named Jupiter, who grew up and forced his father to vomit up his brothers and sisters and then defeated Cronus to establish the pantheon of Olympian

Twitter Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Twitter - Research Paper Example The very first thing that must be considered within the topic is how Twitter has modified our communication. The issue is very important as Twitter plays a crucial role in society, because people usually rely on the information they read there and carefully select the information they post on twitter themselves. As far as more and more portable technological devices like smartphones and tablets are getting released almost every single day, availability of communication has the biggest rates than it has ever had. Personally I use my smartphone most of my time no matter where I am, because the device is always with me and I have a constant access to the Internet. The Twitter application allows me to stay in touch with the rest of the world any time I want, because I always can open my Twitter account and read what’s new happens, and not only in my friends’ lives but in the world in general. I also use tablet, because it is convenient to share news with my friends by posti ng links to my news feed through it. The availability of technological gadgets in fact impacts the way me and all the rest of people perceive communication nowadays. In the article â€Å"Evolution of Communication: From Email to Twitter and Beyond† Alex Iskold points on the fact that Twitter is not only a simple communicational tool but it is a service that is both a messenger and a blog (n.pag). Thus it turns out that Twitter users can post any information that concerns their lives without any requirement to get any response to it. This nuance makes Twitter a kind of social networking that has notifying character. For instance, when I want to interact with a particular person I may send a message on Twitter, which the person is supposed to read; although I do it publically and I get the person’s response that everybody in my news feed can also read. This kind of communication destroys the boundaries of privacy in relationships and in fact even

Dairy industry - canada's supply management system Essay

Dairy industry - canada's supply management system - Essay Example Petkantchin (2008) has mentioned that the â€Å"Canadian milk prices have been two to three times higher than world prices since 1986. This has no doubt contributed to a drop of nearly 15% in per capita milk consumption in Canada between 1986 and 2003† (Petkantchin). Canada is one of the biggest producers of dairy products. At the same time the prices of the dairy products are very high in Canada because of the quota system enforced by the government in the supply management of dairy products in Canada. The productivity gains are actually wasted because of the quota system. The creation of Canadian Dairy Commission in 1966 was greeted with immense pleasure by the dairy farmers; however their expectations went wrong since the government introduced the quota system to control the production of dairy products in Canada. The quota system controls the dairy products production in Canada even though Canada has huge potentials in developing the dairy sector. â€Å"One would argue that with the high capital that Canadian dairy farmers have to invest in quota, it makes it difficult for the next generation to farm. This is entirely correct† (Brander, p.12). The dairy farmers need to invest big amounts in order to keep the quota system in tact which is not a good sign for the future generation. Big expenditure or capital needed for dairy farming will force the next generation to look for other options. At the same time, the tight control over the supply management of dairy products resulted as a barrier to the entry of new players in the Canadian dairy market from external sources. It is quite possible that entrepreneurs from other countries may invest in Canada in the dairy sector because of globalization and liberalization policies adopted by Canada. But the tight control over the supply of dairy products in Canada prevents foreign investors from investing in the Canadian dairy sector. Supply management works well for conventional

Sociology - Values are the cultural conceptions Essay

Sociology - Values are the cultural conceptions - Essay Example Posted speed limits are an example of a formal norm where there is a written rule and a prescribed punishment for violation. Sanctions are the punishments and rewards that are received for violating or obeying society's norms. Sanctions will vary according to the value society places on a norm. The sanction for speeding will be more severe than the sanction for wearing a hat indoors. Since it is a norm for students to get good grades, if I work hard I will be rewarded with a good grade. Folkways are informal norms that govern the everyday actions of the members of a society. They exist to promote a unified acceptance of right and wrong and serve to regulate the behavior of society. When a man opens a door for me it is a folkway that has been used to reinforce the traditional male dominance in society. Mores are the norms that a society deems especially important. They encompass the most treasured values of a society. In America children are highly valued, as is their welfare. The laws against child abuse are social mores. Ascribed status is the significance that society places on a person's social standing without respect to their accomplishments or talents. Ascribed status may involve age, gender or race. In America, the white male has been given an ascribed status based on race and gender. Ascribed status is continually being challenged in society as illustrated by the feminist movement. AchievedAchieved Status Achieved status is attained through one's own actions and efforts. The status may be positive such as mayor or negative such as convicted felon. Ascribed status can influence our possibility of achieved status. George Bush has an ascribed status of being white, male, and from a prominent family. However, he did make the effort to become president and that is his achieved status. Master Status Throughout a person's life, they may gain several different stations in life. A successful corporate CEO may find himself in prison or as an ex-convict. The way that society views his status is the master status. Martin Luther King has the ascribed status of being black. He also had the achieved status of minister, civil rights leader, and convict. His status as a civil rights leader outweighs his status as a convict and becomes his master status. The master status may change with time and with the individual members of the society. Role Strain Role strain arises when a social position demands conflicting requirements. A business manager may have the task of hiring the best people available, yet is given a limited budget to work with. His role is to fill the vacancies with qualified people, and also as a budget watchdog. The President often comes under role strain while acting as Commander in Chief and as a representative of the people, each having conflicting desires. Role Conflict Role conflict arises when a person holds two or more social positions that have conflicting roles. By fulfilling the role of one position they are required to violate the role of another. In the workplace, people who are promoted are often faced with managing people that used to be their peers. They are placed in the position of fulfilling the role of supervisor or the role of trusted friend, which may result in a conflict. Works Consulted Henslin, James M. Should Parents Be Obliged to Immunise Their Children Against Childhood Diseases Essay Example for Free

Should Parents Be Obliged to Immunise Their Children Against Childhood Diseases Essay Some people argue that the state does not have the right to make parents immunise their children. However, I feel the question is not whether they should immunise but whether, as members of society, they have the right not to. Preventative medicine has proved to be the most effective way of reducing the incidence of fatal childhood diseases. As a result of the widespread practice of immunising young children in our society, many lives have been saved and the diseases have been reduced to almost zero. In previous centuries children died from ordinary illnesses such as influenza and tuberculosis and because few people had immunity, the diseases spread easily. Diseases such as dysentery were the result of poor hygiene but these have long been eradicated since the arrival of good sanitation and clean water. Nobody would suggest that we should reverse this good practice now because dysentery has been wiped out. Serious diseases such as polio and smallpox have also been eradicated through national immunisation programmes. In consequence, children not immunised are far less at risk in this disease-free society than they would otherwise be. Parents choosing not to immunise are relying on the fact that the diseases have already been eradicated. If the number of parents choosing not to immunise increased, there would be a similar increase in the risk of the diseases returning. Immunisation is not an issue like seatbelts which affects only the individual. A decision not to immunise will have widespread repercussions for the whole of society and for this reason, I do not believe that individuals have the right to stand aside. In my opinion immunisation should be obligatory.

A Book Review on ‘A Man on the Moon’ Essay Example for Free

A Book Review on ‘A Man on the Moon’ Essay Not all great authors can come up great educational book such as Andrew Chaikin’s ‘A Man on the Moon: The Voyages of the Apollo Astronauts’. Moreover, not all true-to-life-stories writers are lucky to deliver such factual account having first-hand information gained through interviews. As Chaikin have provided necessary details such as scientific technicalities, knowledge and feelings involved, running down from the role of politics, biographies, competitions, emotions, failures, accomplishments, trials, motives, sacrifices, faults, private thoughts and comments, up to the extent of constructing the blueprint, plans and programs of planetary explorations, his readers might not just be well-informed about it but completely aware of the ins and outs of manned space flight and landing on the moon. See more:Â  The Story of an Hour Literary Analysis Essay In this book, what the author wants is to expose most of the elements of the Apollo missions that only few people could know. He makes it possible as he did a thorough investigation of his craft. Doing a series of in-depth interviews to almost hundred percent of the people behind the Apollo missions especially the twenty four moon voyagers is never easy. Likewise, pretending that the time doing the interview is dramatically inflict as it is makes his audience feel very closely enough to the scenario if not apprehensively feel updated. Hence, to be hooked in this astonishing book is nothing but normal. The main argument of the author is set to make available for everyone his own discovery of the profound history behind the historical explorations and discoveries from the initial first manned flight of the Apollo 8 around the moon’s vicinity in 1961 to the successful first landing on the moon of the Apollo 11 in 1972 and even beyond that as he reveals reflections of the sixth landing on the moon of the Apollo 17, which is also the last landing as of today. This thesis is well-supported by first-hand interviews, academic reviews, scientific approach, and the legal and technical aspects which played very important roles in the Apollo missions’ golden age and its declination. Writing his work in a very comprehensible approach for easy reading and understanding of every historical detail paints the colorful adventures and voyages of every man and events behind the mission. Thus, it could also serve as a very rich reference for any research about space technology. Having been read ‘A Man on the Moon’ inspires me not to stop believing of my every potential. As Chaikin discloses man’s unlimited discoveries once ignite and properly supported of external factors, enlightens young minds to seek for the infinity. However, knowing that the final landing, as written on the book, happened decades ago can trigger the notion of stopping one’s eagerness to dream and explore. Personally, I could say that the book is not just a thought-provoking one but heart-stopping as well. With those vivid illustrations of the interviewees that are intelligently interpreted and written by the author, it could make me feel as if I myself have competed for the moon’s flight seat or even touched moon’s face. Therefore, making me feel reviving my innermost interest to liberate my wildest dream of becoming an astronaut is the best proof that this book is truly an amazing masterpiece. The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Colonialism

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Colonialism The colonialism has a lot of advantages and disadvantages which will be explore in this essay but before going to that let know what colonialism is a lot about. Colonialism is the total control or governing influence of nation over a dependent country or people or condition of being colonial. The colonized countries were mostly Africans because of the way they lived and behave so the colonizers were using the excuse of them not civilized and religious. But the colonial masters aim was to exploit the colony economy and move them to their country making the colony depend on them. The disadvantages of colonialism is far more than its advantages, the main advantage is the civilization while the disadvantage is the economic dependent. But let talk of the advantages before its disadvantages. Advantages of Colonialism However, the advantages are the stop of killing twins especially among the Igbos and the reason behind the killing of them was the beliefs which says is against nature and inherently evil just because it rare occurrence. So when the colonial masters came it was seen as an act of early age practice, which needed to be stopped because, is in human. Also the equality among the men and women in a public opinion with education for everyone in Christian theology and academic field. In particular the education because is the best aspect of the colonialism, most of early age people were not educated, dress themselves with leaves hunt food in forest and so on. Why education is important part of colonialism is that it brings about civilization because when the people are educated they will definitely be civilize and the country too because they both work together. Also the newborn and toddler deaths that were dealt with because the death of young children and infants were seriously occurring a nd the Africans do not know the cause of them more or less prevent or cure it because of lack of education, so the coming of the colonizers help the Africans to solve the problem. Also, the way women were treated by sexism and violence was stopped, they were treated like property to the men, they were not allow to speak in public nor listen to their opinion and they were harass by the men. So when the colonial maters came they saw that as an act of immorality because both men and women are humans with equal rights and they stopped it too. Another advantage is the development from the colonizers such as infrastructure that is electricity, telecoms roads and water which impacted a lot to African people because all this were not in advanced in the country. And in the field of medicine is was very important because the infants death was cure through it, the African people now buy preserved food which are manufactured with development in agriculture, mining and manufacturing which stopped the hunting of food because they hunt before they can eat. All this happen with the help of modern farming methods and food security that were invented to the country. There was a lso development in politics bringing democracy system of government which is to make everyone vote and be voted for. There were trade opportunities making the African people to have access to external trade around the world which expose them to other ways of trading. There are advantages but some of the important ones were explored in the essay. Disadvantages of Colonialism Moreover, the disadvantage are far more than the advantages been through with the advantages let move on to the disadvantages. There was loss of culture because the colonial masters were trying to bring their ways of life, behave and culture making the African cultures to go down living their own ways. The African way was the loyalty to the royal rulers with members of parliament and followers among the ethnics groups but the coming of the colonial masters made them to have complete loss of culture. With that happening it brought about lack of respect for Africans traditions with submission to the colonizers ways and behavior. Another disadvantage is the lost of land which were forcefully collected from Africans with guns on their heads making them to have nothing on their own and some of them are with families to feed but for their lives they have to let go of the land which were given to the Europeans un Africa. On snatching those lands making them homeless and struggling to surviv e the colonial masters imposed tax on them which forced the Africa to work for some of the colonizers settling in Africa to enable them pay the taxes which made them loss ownership in general of their land. With that there were more and more settlers in Africa which was making them to be exposing to new diseases such as ablepsy, malarial fever, yellow fever, malnutrition and so on. Those diseases were also killing the Africans because they are yet to develop medically to know what those diseases are and to treat them. There was economic dependent; before the colonial masters came they were managing their economy and the recourses the way they came without having problem but when the colonizers came they started exploiting the recourses to their country. Furthermore, the Africas economy was very good but they do not exploit what they cannot use, knowing this by the colonial masters they decided to come and exploit using the excuse of not civilize and religious on doing that it makes the Africans to depend on them when the land is owned by them. There was also the dominant class that is the ones to rule them with the aid of the rulers and also spy on Africans to know whether they are doing what they are asked which made them called the natives savages that is uncivilized people. At that time the living conditions in Africa changed a lot with the forced culture imposed on them bringing their own ways making the people to be westernized that are dressing, clothing, behavior and act of doing everything in their ways. There was also slave trading; Africans were carried from their homes to the colonial masters country to go and work for them and also fight in wars for them which when they will come back they will only given recommendation but if it is their countrymen they were treating them like they fought actively than the Africans while they know it was not so. Also lack of moral compass that is not been concern with rules of right conduct within the determined directions by colonial masters and paying allegiance to them. Finally, some of this disadvantages are still in existing in Africa especially Nigeria because we are still paying the loyalty to the colonial masters. There are more disadvantages but the little of them was explored in the essay and as for the advantages it really has impacted a lot on African people. In medical field; the African people are trying their possible best to be like the colonizers, most of the diseases in Africa are from them such as measles, malaria and recently Hiv/Aids but both the colonizers and their colony are working on the treatment. In Nigeria colonialism ended when it got is independent which a lot has improved such areas are industries, mining, agriculture and so on but the first two are the one focused on making agriculture to go down which is not suppose to be so because Nigeria is a fertile land. So if agriculture is given attention too will also improve the economy of the country because there are both political and economical instability in the country s o the only way is to improve in more aspect of the economy and they should also be a nationalist in whole Africa to make it a better continent. The advantages and disadvantages of colonialism is a very good aspect of history because it made someone to know what happened in the past and what is still happening in the country.

Capital Punishment Essay -- essays research papers

Capital punishment, also known as the death penalty, is the hardest form of punishment enforced in the United States today. It is a controversial issue that continues to be debated by the American public. Most of the factors people do not agree on the issue of Capital punishment is immoral and for this reason should not be allowed in our society.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  On the other hand, there are many reasons for the support of Capital punishment. Capital punishment protects the innocent of society against the violence of criminals. Capital punishment deters crime and helps create peaceful conditions for our society. Capital punishment also serves the purpose of justice for the victims of the crimes. Furthermore, people believe that death penalty reduces serious crimes. Although there are many effective reasons supporting the death penalty, many people still deem that Capital punishment should be abolished because it is cruel, inhumane and barbaric. Moreover, the possibility of innocent death is always there. In addition, some people believe that the most effective punishment to deter crimes is life sentence, not Capital punishment.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Firstly, Capital Punishment is cruel and unusual punishment. Once a jury has convicted a person, they go to the second part of the trial, the punishment phase. If the jury recommends the death penalty and the judge agrees, the criminal will face some form of execution and then a life is ended. The death pena...

The Seeds :: essays research papers fc

The seeds of the Vietnam War were sown two decades prior to the conflict. Following the Second World War the United States adopted two foreign policies, which seemed to coexist peacefully for a time. The policies: anti-colonialism (policy against colonization of small nations) and anti-communism. Little did the United States know that the coexistence of these two policies would soon become a great paradox. Indochina had been a colony of France since the middle of the nineteenth century, within its parameter Indochina contained three nations: Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. At the conclusion of WWII these nations were seeking independence from the colonial rule of its motherland, France. On the heels of the war the U.S was primarily occupied with assisting Europe recover economically and escape communist domination (Pentagon Papers A-2). Confronted with these problems of what then seemed to be a larger scale the U.S considered the fate of Vietnamese "nationalism" relatively in significant. In fact Indochina appeared to be a region in the post-war world in which the U.S need not involve itself (P. Papers A-2). Tides quickly shifted, however, when the problem was brought to President Roosevelt's attention by Premier Ramadier of France. Following his policy of anti-colonialism, Roosevelt advocated the independence of all Indochinese nations. France, unwilling to give up colonial rule continued to occupy Indochina. Meanwhile, a man by the name of Nguyen Ai Quoc, who later came to be known as Ho Chi Minh, formed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) as well as an army of Vietnamese freedom fighters called the Viet Minh. Finally on December 19, 1946 the Vietnamese troops attacked French troops stationed on the outskirts of Hanoi. This began the start of the eight year Franco-Viet Minh War. Shortly prior to this conflict President Roosevelt had died, fanning the flame of anti-colonialism and leaving the official policy of the U.S toward the Franco-Vietnam war as neutral. Due to the neutrality of the United States during the first four years of the Franco-Viet Minh War, the Vietnam War became, inevitably, the destiny of the United States. This paper will explain three major points and how they laid the foundation for the Vietnam War. These points include: 1) reasons for U.S. neutrality, 2) how this neutrality allowed Communism to blossom in Vietnam, and 3) how this blossoming Communsim made the Vietnam War inevitable. One of the main reasons for this lack of action on the part of the U.

Writing a Police Report Narrative :: Writing Police Reports

Report writing is a form of writing that gives it reader information a type of writing that explain what is taking place or what has taking it a recounting of events . Most newspapers use this type of descriptive recreation of events within their report writing they explain the circumstances of case, court proceeding, type of crime that occurred, etc. (Police reports and there purpose (n.d). Newspaper writer try to explain to the readers what took place and why it is or should be topics of concern police report writing follow the same guidelines. Having the ability to write reports is of extreme importance in police and correctional work daily. Report writing is one of the primary forms of communication within the field of law enforcement agency. Police reports are read by supervisors, police chiefs, fellow officers as well as other criminal justice professionals. Furthermore these documents are written to display the result of an investigation, crimes scene, incidents, and more so it is imperative that there is no grammar errors or misspellings with in the document. Police report writers paint the picture of the events that took place from the time they were called until, the time of their arrival to a crime scene or incident. It’s important that all reports submitted by correctional workers and police officer be well-written with factual information giving step by step details of everything that transpired in chronological order also being very specific about every detail. The reason this is of high important is because this report can assist prosecutor in obtaining a valid conviction of the proper suspect accused (Police reports and there purpose (n.d). Whereas if the police report is poorly written the defense can argue against the finding and may use the discrepancies against the prosecuting state. When poorly written reports are enter into evident for juries to deliberate on it a huge possibility that the report may cause jurors to call into t o question whether the officer who wrote it is as careless in other aspects of their police work. as noted by (Police reports and there purpose (n.d). Another issue that will occur if reports are not properly written is miscommunications or misunderstanding. For example a police officer submits a document with only one misspelled words to his police chief, the chief read the report from the officer he put decrease instead of the deceased and cause the chief to send the report the wrong department.

Leadership of Theodore Roosevelt

President Theodore Roosevelt never â€Å"picked sides† with the liberals of the far left or the conservatives of the right. He usually found himself intertwined in the middle of the groups. Sometimes thinking like a conservative and sometimes thinking like that of a liberal. Whatever the case, he always maintained a foundation in the center to keep a neutral balance. â€Å"He stood close to the center and bared his teeth at the conservatives of the right and the liberals of the extreme left.† President Roosevelt, although not a strong liberal, did do many things to help the country move on its way to become a more progressive country. The Elkin's Act of 1903 was one thing Rosevelt did to make him seem like a liberal. It said there would be heavy fines given on the railroads that gave rebates and on the shippers that excepted them. For example, Roosevelt did his best as a trustbuster. The first thing that busted into headlines was an attack on the North Securities Company (a railroad holding company) in 1902. As a liberal, Roosevelt's main issue to prove was that the government, not private business, ruled the country. In dealing with conservation, Roosevelt knew just how to handle himself. He took conservation out of the conservation stage, threw some of the zest from his personality behind it, made it seem big, and got the public's opinion. He created a policy of â€Å"multiple-use resource management†. This was to help keep things from changing too much and to try and conserve what all he could. In addition, Roosevelt granted rights to striking mine workers. Winter was coming and the country needed coal to keep warm. Roosevelt tried his best to keep the country happy and take care of business without any political changes, so he solved the mine workers ordeal himself. Though part liberal, Roosevelt stayed opened minded to the conservatives to keep his people happy with as few changes as possible. Theodore Roosevelt never swung his big stick with full force. Roosevelt never swung with full force to the left and not to too hard to the right. For example, he had to battle against two fronts with his dealings in trying to preserve the forests. He had to battle against greedy commercial interests who abused nature (the liberals), as well as against romantic preservationists (the conservatives). Not being able to give both sides what they wanted, Roosevelt had to stand his ground in the middle and make a decision without being persuaded one way or the other. Throughout President Roosevelt's history as president, he chose not to be one sided in anything that he did and to keep an open mind about many things. Roosevelt never made a definitive jump to the right or to the left, therefore, leaving him not very well balanced on one foot hopping back and forth with different points of views. Due to his position in the middle, he had to remain open minded about everything that came towards him.

A research proposal on sporting and its personal development Essay

The usual playing adds little value to an individual. Sport, however, helps in the development of athletic as well as the physical abilities. Sports involve team work which adds value to the social context of an individual, the way of relationship with team members and how one perceives himself. The presence of a coach in a game helps in the control of various lessons that sportsmen learn in the field of play. The coaches help in the examination of values, designing of activities considering various results as well as leading through examples. This work will address various types of development related to sports including â€Å"physical, intellectual, social, and emotional as well as moral capabilities† (Barez 2008). Problem statement Different people have different opinions on sports and sporting activities. However, it is well known that sports lead to development of certain positive qualities including self discipline, dedication and leadership skills through the competitive participation in various events. On the other, a number of people also argue that sports do not have a positive result on character development due to the win ego. In this case, the mentality for a must win leads to unethical behaviors including excessive cheating, aggressiveness and drug abuse. This makes the real value of sports very complex and worth a discussion topic on this paper. However, the pros outdo the cons and the paper will discuss on sports as a development activity. Sports help in the physical development through balancing the mind, body as well as the spirit (Holt 2008). Literature review  In the early childhood as Bares (2008) states, sporting which is mostly in form of play helps in learning skills including running and jumping as well as balancing. This also helps in gaining and development of social, emotional, moral and cognitive competencies. This helps the children to learn the rights and the wrongs. As a result this develops the individual creativity in addition to the physical development (Bares 2008). In this case, winning is not the major factor but the child engages in sporting activities for fun, enjoyment and normal participation. In this case, success is contributed through fun and creativity. The participation in various roles under different games helps in stimulation of the child creativity and imagination. The children are in a position of exploring as well as interacting with the environment. This is in addition to testing their motor skills, interaction and solving of problem individually (Holt 2008). In the middle childhood, sporting becomes a regular activity for children. Sporting helps in development of confidence in various areas including â€Å"social, emotional, mental and physical aspects. † This helps them in mastering and neglecting the negative influences. Sporting at this level also help in cooperation and competition that are constructive. In addition, it works in the independence in solving conflicts and being responsible (Murphy 2005). During the early adolescent stage, the children experience various body developments and this could be coupled with emotional stress and instability. Sporting helps the teenagers to control their emotions and making of responsible choices. During sporting activities, the exchange of information helps in development of communication skills which helps them in expression and solving of problems (Barez 2008). Sporting helps in literal interpretation and respect where one learns to adhere to various rules. There is a schedule that must be followed for exercising and this works in building of responsibility where one should also be committed and able to persevere. During various competitions, sporting helps the teenagers to develop self control as well as respecting others where one is able to accept wins with humility as well as losing. Teammates are supportive and this with various other traits goes beyond the field to the individual ways of living (Murphy 2005). In the late adolescent, according to Barez (2008), sporting plays a major role where teenagers are involved in various decisions making including â€Å"personal relationships, higher education, vocational training and career activities. Various hardships like â€Å"unemployment, financial strains, career confusion, unsatisfactory work experiences and lack of family support† among others pose a great threat to individual life. Sporting helps in provision of increased levels of self esteem, perseverance and self discipline. Sporting helps in supporting self competence and independence. However, sporting in itself is also a career and work as source of income. Through sporting one establishes his personal goals as well as career objectives (Barez 2008). Conclusion  Sporting is a major part of personal life which helps in achievement of high life standards and expectations. First, sporting acts as a motivational tool which works in encouragement and development of effective learning methods. It helps one to have specific life goals and objectives by focusing on training goals which calls for self discipline and responsibility. One is able to work without supervision with consistency which calls for commitment for performance. One is able to undergo great perseverance and can approach problems with confidence.

Charlie Wilson’s War

For the second portion of my summer assignment I watched Charlie Wilson’s War. Throughout the movie the various governments affected many of the individuals. The movie is set in the cold war where the United states would not openly oppose the USSR. When the United States took action against the Soviets it had to be done covertly. Charlie Wilson was a U. S. Congressman who decided to help the Afghans in there battle against the Soviets. During the movie Charlie tells of how he originally became interested in politics, When he was a boy his twisted neighbor Charles Hazard, an elected city official, poisoned his dog Teddy. To get back at Mr. Hazard, Charlie went out and got a farming drivers permit and drove voters out to the polls, saying before they went to vote, â€Å"Not to influence your vote, but Charles Hazard poisoned my dog. † It was at this moment that Charlie decided that he wanted to be involved in the government, because through the democratic process he was able to get what he wanted. When faced with the conundrum of how to transport all of the weapons into Afghanistan Charlie asked the President of Pakistan to get involved. The Pakistani president would have not have had to do this step of being a â€Å"middle-man† if the US would have declared war with the USSR, but because of the necessity of covert operations the president of Pakistan had to become involved and risk his country to help the United States and Afghanistan. For Charlie to convince the chairman of the committee overseeing covert operations in the area to vote in his favor he said that he must get a blind pakistani girl out of jail, the girl was put in there because she was raped, and there were not enough witnesses to prove her innocence. The chairman said that if the President of Pakistan released her then he would vote in Charlie’s favor. Because of Pakistan’s Policies the girl was put in jail because she was not able to provide a description of her attacker. Also many Sheep herds were killed by the Soviets Helicopter Pilots.

Adolf hitler Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Adolf hitler - Research Paper Example Hitler was born in a small house near the German border and it is widely speculated that his troubled might have left gigantic psychological impression on his mind which ultimately played a momentous role in how he turned out to be as a leader. His innate dispositions of argumentativeness and hostility have also been widely researched to analyze the extent to which they played a role in developing his personality, especially after he attracted prodigious controversy for incredulously cruel murder of the Jews. He pathologically lacked self-control and incessantly shouted at his subordinates after becoming a prominent German leader. This research paper aims at contemplating the very important historical figure Adolf Hitler by reviewing important historical evidence. It is believed that Adolf Hitler was undeniably one of the most ferocious leaders, but he is also remembered as a talented leader who managed to rise to prominence from a small town of Germany and after establishing control in his homeland went on to influence the entire Europe. Without sheer talent, such accomplishments are impossible which suggests that portraying Hitler as merely evil is a flawed tendency of many scholars (Hyland, Boduszek, and Kielkiewicz 58). But, this stands true too in context of his insane ferociousness and hostility that the genocide of millions of innocent Jews was so much influenced by his dictation that it is impossible to read the name Hitler somewhere and not automatically think of the vicious atrocities in reference to the Holocaust. Extermination camps were established throughout Europe by Nazi Germany under leadership of Hitler to identify Jews which were the principal target and kill then by either forcing them to work strenuously like animals under starvation conditions or dragging them to the gas chambers. History reveals that during all 12 years of Hitler’s dictatorship, more than 400 degrading regulations were designed to restrict the Jews in any way possi ble making their lives miserable (The History Place). It is stressed by Grobman that a historical genocide like the Holocaust has its roots entrenched in many hopelessly negative attitudes and prejudices that Hitler nurtured in his mind against the Jews. The Holocaust is the most researched and studied example of a genocide conducted on a mass level and studies suggest that this incident was a confluence of two streams, negative attitudes and strong prejudices aged by many years. The WWII itself was the not reason behind the Holocaust nor did it contribute to the occurrence of this event. It only played the role of an assistant effectively covering up the incident which involved genocide of as many as six million European Jews. It was actually the contribution made by many toxic and destructive attitudes of Hitler that the Holocaust occurred. Such unfortunate events arise from prejudice based on â€Å"ignorance, fear, and misunderstanding about minority groups† (Grobman) whic h is stereotypical thinking and â€Å"other groups who are different from ourselves† (Grobman) which indicates Hitler’s poisonous attitudes. If history of this man who as an exacting and menacing leader promoted so much violence in the world and destroyed millions of life is scrutinized, it is realized that Adolf Hitler as a child was very weak in studies except art (Trueman). He had no significant interest in school and frequently engaged in hostile arguments with his teachers because since the very beginning, he was not ready to be directed by anyone as it was his tendency to see the matter of direction as his prized prerogative not to be shared with

TROUBLE BREWS AT STARBUCKS--Case Study Case Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

TROUBLE BREWS AT STARBUCKS-- - Case Study Example Essentially, the 5Cs analysis, which was initially the 3Cs strategy, includes elements such as customer, company, collaborators, climate and competitors. The key aspects that Schultz had in mind were customer, competitors, and the company itself in order for the vision to expand Starbucks to be realistic. In essence, Schultz intended for Starbucks to serve coffee at its outlets with the same taste of that made at home and factored in the growing competition from entrants such as McDonalds, which was winning its customer base. The main target market for Starbucks as part of this vision was to be the people that prefer to brew their coffee from home because not many chain stores served coffee that was of their desired quality. The value positioning to customers would be that Starbucks would be able to serve coffee that was the same as that brewed at home hence saving their customers the hustle of having to only rely on home ground coffee with the taste that they know. Additionally, Schultz also examined Starbucks position and sought to remain relevant in the market by providing its needs and meeting customer satisfaction while register ing profits. Schultz vision met resistances, but Starbucks later bought into the idea in which the first step in implementation based on the 4Ps marketing mix was to create a place or atmosphere that customers would relax in. The idea was to create the third place after home and work where their target market would enjoy the ambience of Starbucks while sipping on a cup of coffee (3). The ambience of the ‘third place’ included the access to music, books, and movies as part of its product delivery options, which was successful in increasing customer flow to their stores (7). The other factor was that Starbucks also targeted areas with heavy population flow such as airports, which succeeded in capturing a wider target market. Secondly, Starbucks also trained its staff on the

Importance of Mastering Computer Skills in the 21st Century Essay

Importance of Mastering Computer Skills in the 21st Century - Essay Example Even the most basic computer skills are incredibly important, and there are many tasks that would be considered as being the 'basic' computer literacy skills, and they are: performing basic operations, such as turning the computer on and off, which sounds simple but which can actually be rather tricky to people who have never used a computer before; word-processing, as this is considered as being the most basic of all skills because when using computers it is easier as the computer deviates it a little from the common typewriter; email, which is obviously incredibly important to learn because this is considered as being the modern-day form of mail, and these days most all communication is done through email; printing of a document, which although not always necessary is crucial to learn; and finally the use of peripherals, as you need to be able to know what a portable driver is, for instance, and how it is used. Once you have learned even just the most basic computer skills, then you will be able to move forward and start learning and understanding about the multitude of other issues that there are for you to grasp the concept of, and although things may often seem a bit difficult to start off with, if you begin by learning the basic steps you will see how much dramatically easier the entire process is overall. There are many consequences that are sure to come if you do not have computer skills, for instance you really cannot get a good job these days if you do not have computer skills, not only because most companies and businesses require you to do some sort of computer work, but as well because you are going to have to know how to type up a resume and cover letter on the computer and print it out, as well as respond via email to possible employers. You are certainly going to have a lot of trouble if you do not have computer skills under your belt, which is why you most definitely should make sure that you take some sort of class or go to some type of seminar where you can learn the essential computer basics, and you will immediately notice the benefits that you will reap from doing so. In the 21st century, a large majority of work and communication is done using computers, and especially in regards to the Internet, which, if you learn how to use properly, will allow you to go places that you never thought possible. For instance, there are so many different types of jobs and working opportunities that you can find on the Internet, and for the most part, these will be options that you would not have otherwise had, without the use of the Internet. Not only that, but rather than using postage mail as had been more largely used in the past, with the Internet you are able to connect and communicate with people all over the world, whether they be friends, family members, or people you just met, quickly and easily. There are so many different benefits that can come from you having even the most basic computer skills, which is why it is truly so important to keep up with the times and make sure that you are aware of the advanced technology, in particular computers and the I nternet.

Government Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 3

Government - Essay Example This would politicize the entire education system since the appointed education leaders have to act in favor of the governor’s preference, but not in accordance with the people’s desire. An independent state elected board such as Texas Board of Education should play the role of overseeing and managing the education in states. This will help in bringing positive tension in the education system since the board will carry out its functions with independence from the political leaders such as the governors (Robelen, par. 4). I agree that governors are probably correct when they say that individuals look at them as the leaders of a state’s education system. Governors are usually involved in the leadership of the entire state, which implies that the governor acts as the head of education leaders of a state. Hence, he has to take part indirectly in the leadership of a state’s education. I have an opinion that decision making in education must be depoliticized. De-politicization of decision making in the education helps in the implementation of education policies through considering nonpolitical influence, which develops the education

A critique of leadership and team management style in the light of Vip Essay

A critique of leadership and team management style in the light of Vip model and other current theories - Essay Example Few decades back, dynamics of a household were rigidly defined as father entrusted with the role of a bread winner, and the mother assigned to be the housekeeper. It was, most assuredly, regarded a woman’s duty to ensure that her husband and children were well taken care of. However, the shifting social, economical, and financial conditions, along with the increasing cost of living, has vastly evolved the thinking process, and has resulted, in many families, both parents working for livelihood. In addition, the deteriorating family structure, increasing poverty, and decreasing sense of security, has also resulted in children, from an early age, suffering from confidence and self-esteem issues. The severity of this situation can be realized from the fact that between years 2004 and 2008, eight hundred new children centers were inaugurated in UK and thirty percent of them were opened in extremely disadvantaged communities (Siraj-Blatchford and Manni 2007).This highlights the sig nificant role played by the nurseries and other early year’s centers in the support and growth of their respective communities. If a center succeeds in providing a safe, secure, and a neutral learning environment to its children, it not only provides peace of mind to parents, but most importantly leaves an indelible mark on children’s lives, and molds them to become better individuals. As the beginning proverb hints, taking proper care of a child requires a collective effort, which can only be possible with appropriate leadership and guidance. Therefore, to run a successful early year’s center, a manager is required to have certain specific attributes. My interview was based on three themes, which were Vision, Implementation/Operational, and People Manager/Team Management Skills of the managing practitioner. These themes were based on the â€Å"VIP Model,† which was proposed by Mark Hollingworth (2003, p. 34). According to Hollingworth, a true leader is i n fact a ‘VIP,’ which stands for ‘Visionary, Implementer, and a People Manager’. These three primary leadership traits, in the light of other theories as well, will be mostly explored in this portfolio. Various other themes, such as handling parent-staff interactions, curriculum setting, goals of the center, etc. were also considered, but after careful consideration, it was deduced that Hollingworth’s three categories encompasses majority of the themes. For example, parent-staff meetings is a part of ‘people manager’ category, curriculum setting falls in the ‘implementation’, and goal setting is definitely an element of the ‘vision.’ As shown in Appendix A, The format adopted for the interview was semi-structured, consisting of mostly open ended questions. The justification of using this format was to get a deep insight into the mind of interviewee, and to judge his leadership style according to VIP model and ot her contemporary management theories. In addition, the interview was designed and conducted with the intention of â€Å"establishment of rapport, identification of follow-up questions, and avoidance of leading questions’ (Partington 2001, p. 4). The conversation was carried out with utmost neutrality, empathy, and without any judgmental and sarcastic connotations. On the whole, the interview was primarily structured to find out if Mr. John Smith, our interviewee, has characteristics of becoming a VIP. It should be noted that, due to confidentiality, the real names of our interviewee and care center are not revealed in this report. The significance of having a ‘

Summary + analysis Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Summary + analysis - Article Example The unique technical features to look out for when identifying a film noir, according to the authors, include the unusual lighting where light and shadow keep opposing, tilted camera angles, and the scene oppositions that are off-center. Film noirs are also characterized by the inversion of customary values and moral ambivalence. The article further notes that, neo-noir, on the other hand, refers to films that followed the noir classic period. Neo-noir also contains noir sensibility and noir themes. They also have similar characteristics to noir such as disorientation, moral ambivalence, pessimism and alienation. Great examples of neo-noir have also been given by the author. These include movies such as Bonnie and Clyde, China Town, Taxi Driver and Body Heat. The author has also described space, time and subjectivity in neo-noir cinema. Different forms of neo-noir time have been described, including past, present and future neo-noir. The author concludes the article by describing the irreconcilable differences of neo-noir. In my personal analysis of the article, the author’s main aim of giving the examples of movies is to demystify the real meaning of film noir and neo-noir. Hollywood film noir is said to have been generated in the early 1940s and the late 1950s. This leaves a lot to be answered because the author has given many examples of movies that were produced as late as 1995 and 1997. Some of these movies should be referred to as neo-noir because they come after the classic noir period. Also, saying that neo-noir films are better at embodying the noir outlook is confusing because noir films had their own unique characteristics and identifying themes. I believe that there should be a clear distinction between noir films and neo-noir films. The investigation of philosophical underpinnings and themes of neo-noir films should also be applied to noir films so as to allow the use of movies to explore and explain traditional philosophical ideas of
